Speak Up, Reach Out, You are not Alone

Speak Up, Reach Out, You are not Alone. Sri Lanka has been one of the top ten countries in the world in terms of the incidence of suicides according to the World Health Organisation (WHO) during the last twenty years. When Sri Lanka was number one in the world fifteen years ago Tanamalwila Divisional Secretary’s Division happened to be the number one place in the country for suicides, thus making itself the highest concentration of suicides in the world. Counselling is an effective awareness programme to prevent suicides and identify the attempters of suicides.

Safer Access to Pesticides

Safer Access to Pesticides. The locker box concept is introduced to keep the pesticides/weedicides and other poisonous agricultural mediums away from direct access. Each locker box has two sets of locks and keys so that the keys can be kept with two different members of a family. Thus if one person tries to commit suicide by consuming poison he or she cannot reach the stored poison without the help of the other person. This technique is supposed to prevent suicide by sudden impulses and to disrupt the easy access. Also this helps to keep the poisons away from the reach of small children and teenagers.

Partners in cooperation

Poverty reduction is a two way process where partners learn from each other.

What Arthacharya does?

Arthacharya socially mobilizes the poorest sections of Sri Lankan society to reduce and alleviate their poverty. This is done through programmes and projects implemented in marginal areas in the country based on needs assessments made by communities themselves with Arthacharya’s assistance.
Arthacharya is a common Sanskrit term used in Sri Lankan society, well understood by both Sinhala and Tamil speaking communities. Literally it means economic behavior. In a more complete and positive sense Arthacharya means constructive socio-economic activity.

Engaged in poverty reduction Arthacharya is an organisation which knows exactly what it is doing. It is definitely not another service delivery operation. Based on its Vision and Mission as well as the Goals and Objectives Arthacharya has carved a strategy to address poverty related issues of the poor.
